Hoff-Barthelson / Copland House Commissions

Composer Workshop

In an ongoing collaboration with the Hoff-Barthelson Music School in nearby Scarsdale, NY, one commission is offered annually to a Copland House Resident to create a brief, intermediate-level composition for a student chamber ensemble. The composer coaches the student performers as they prepare the work for its premiere at Hoff-Barthelson’s spring New Music Festival. The experience gives these young people a hands-on encounter with the creative process, the opportunity to work directly with a top-flight professional composer, and the excitement of bringing a brand new work to life for the first time. Composers selected have won the Pulitzer Prize, Grammy Award, and many other top honors; these gifted artists (like 2011 Commissionee ERIC MOE, in photo) may also co-direct a workshop session in the school’s innovative Compose Yourself program that encourages musical creativity in young people.
